Edinburgh Local Pharmacy Guide
If you are searching for a local pharmacy in Edinburgh, here is a useful local reference list of the pharmacies that are closest to the major hospitals in Edinburgh, including address, telephone number, and opening hours.
We have highlighted pharmacies with an NHS Pharmacy First on site, as well as pharmacies and chemists that offer on-site blood pressure testing.
This list highlights the nearest off-site community pharmacies to the 10 major hospitals across Edinburgh, West Lothian, Midlothian, East Lothian, and Fife.
There are now very few 24-hour pharmacies operating in Scotland. The gold standard for out-of-hours coverage consists of major supermarket dispensaries or regional hub stores that offer extensive weekend and late-evening hours. These are best if you need medicines in an acute situation.

Final Emergency Tips & Local Advice
This comprehensive directory has been researched and compiled by 1st Focus Homecare, an independent Edinburgh-based care provider dedicated to supporting independent living across the Lothians. Reflecting their commitment to exceptional community support, 1st Focus Homecare has been recognised as a Top 20 Homecare Provider in Scotland by Homecare.co.uk for the last four consecutive years.
Ensuring local residents know exactly where and how to access medical supplies quickly is just one of the many ways they help keep our community safe, connected, and well cared for.
Why You Should Use NHS Pharmacy First Scotland
Before you pick up the phone to dial 111 or consider heading to a busy hospital A&E department, your first line of defence should always be NHS Pharmacy First Scotland.
This excellent service allows any resident or visitor in Scotland to walk straight into a local community pharmacy and receive advice, clinical assessments, or free treatment for a wide range of common illnesses. You do not need an appointment, and you do not need to see a GP first.
When to use it:
Community pharmacists are highly trained healthcare professionals. Thanks to the rollout of the Independent Prescriber (IP) initiative across many Edinburgh pharmacies, pharmacists can now prescribe treatment for a growing range of conditions that previously required a GP appointment.
You should consider using NHS Pharmacy First for:
- Minor illnesses: Coughs, colds, sore throats, earaches and fever.
- Common infections: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women, shingles, impetigo and infected insect bites.
- Skin conditions and allergies: Eczema flare-ups, severe hay fever, rashes and fungal infections.
- Emergency medication supplies: If you have run out of your regular repeat medication and your GP surgery is closed, a pharmacist may be able to provide an emergency supply until your GP reopens.
Why it matters:
Using your local pharmacist first can often help you avoid long waits in busy hospital waiting rooms and provide access to treatment much more quickly. If the pharmacist determines that your condition requires more specialist care, they can advise you on the most appropriate service, including referral to a hospital department, out-of-hours GP or other NHS service where appropriate.
Always remember: If you or someone else is experiencing a life-threatening emergency, such as severe chest pain, heavy bleeding, signs of a stroke or severe breathing difficulties, call 999 immediately rather than attending a pharmacy.
