Before calling NHS 111 or travelling to a busy Accident & Emergency department, your first point of contact for many common health concerns should be NHS Pharmacy First Scotland.
This NHS service allows residents and visitors across Scotland to visit participating community pharmacies without an appointment to receive professional advice, clinical assessment and, where appropriate, treatment for a wide range of common conditions. There is no need to book a GP appointment first.
When should you use it?
Community pharmacists are highly trained healthcare professionals. With the continued rollout of Independent Prescribers (IPs) across many Edinburgh pharmacies, pharmacists can now assess patients and prescribe medicines for many conditions that previously required a GP appointment.
NHS Pharmacy First Scotland is suitable for:
- Minor illnesses: Coughs, colds, sore throats, earache and fever.
- Common infections: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women, shingles, impetigo and infected insect bites.
